APNEA is a deep electronic music label.
Deep electronic music, from ambient techno to dub techno, from deep techno to deep electronica.
01. Who are you ?
Hello, my name is Lou Berlinger. I am from Brittany (department 22) born on a 22nd of May at 10PM. I came back four years ago from Argentina where I spent 10 years working in the music industry and in my studio in Buenos Aires. Also, I was a shop girl selling Dj gear in a famous musical store in Paris. I also teach Ableton to female and non-binary peers since 2012. I became the ambassador of the Touché from Expressive E in 2018 which, was one of my biggest work achievement. Alongside, I do astrological themes in workshops and festivals and I love cats and plants (such a cliché)!
02. What are you listening actually ?
Right now, I am listening to podcasts, especially from labels like Mosaic, Axaminer, Spclnch and of course releases from Apnea. I also listen to more techno stuff from Blocaus or Krzrzrz podcasts from Freddy K which I listen a lot in my car moving around France. I also like some of the local stuff from my city Nantes such as some radio shows on DY10, Prun’ or Jet fm. Some cool dudes in town have a crew called Binaural and their podcasts are amazing!
3. How you came to music ?
I started sneaking in my bro’s K7 and Cd collections at the age of 8. My first lovers were Spiritualized, Pink Floyd, Sun Ra, Tangerine Dream and Jean Michel Jarre. From collecting vinyls of synth pop and coldwave mixed with german minimal, I started spinning vinyls in Paris between 2004 and 2007. Yet, I learned production end of 90s in evening courses: Mao@Forum des Halles in Paris. I only started production in Argentina in 2007 and took classes with Seph (Aula Magna) in musical synthesis, alongside piano lessons. When I came back to France in 2016, I had to start all over again and I think my work as a Dj referee @Woodbrass gave me the impulse that I needed at that time to start my new dub techno project : Slow Dimension. It took me a long time to find my way and it’s also thanks to my best friend Benales who kept pushing me in that direction!
4. What gear do you use in studio/live ?
I use a mix of Hardware and VSTs: I like to use my RE20 pedal combined with Volca bass or SE02. As for my pads, I use the Arturia eDX7 and some chords with a preset I made in Massive.
I just bought the Jomox Xbase 888 and it sounds incredible. Sometimes for lives, I use Touché from Expressive E, its wonderful to add some modulations, into your live!
5. Do you have an anecdote or a memory to tell us about your music ?
I remember making a track on a plane and we had to wait for 8 hours on ground because of a technical problem. People stuck inside where pissed off and complaining to the aircraft crew and even passengers fighting with one another, going insane. I didn’t hear a thing. When I put down my headphones after a few hours.. all around me was chaos! Music heals everything!
6. Which artist would you dream of working with?
Many, too many but mainly Maurizio, Steve O’Sullivan, Deepchord, Burial, Deadbeat, Giriu Dvasios to acknowledge more dubby stuff in their studios. Some more ambient, expe artists like Vynehall, Andy Stott, Suzanne Cianni or Dasha Rush fascinate me by their univers. Finally, if I were to do a more techno project one day, it would Jeff Mills, Exos, DVS1, Conforce, The Lady Machine or Zadig.
Not to mention entering in JMJ’s studio which, would be a teenage dream!
7. What are your plans for the future?
I am currently preparing a contest in my hometown and I have several podcasts to do for England, Germany and Iran (labels and radio shows).
And of course dig some records in some of my favorite shops like Techno Import, Betino’s or 44 Tours in Nantes.
Also lets hope the best for our scene!
